The Doctoral Research Group "Transnational Social Support and Old Age" at the University of Mainz will award:

2 Doctoral Scholarships

starting March, 2019

The Doctoral Research Group pursues the theoretical and empirical study of transnational structures and processes of social support in old age. Due to increasing border crossing developments in old age, its aim is to analyse how social support is created, experienced and challenged in older people’s transnational lifeworlds.

Applicants need to have a university degree (MA) acquired in the last two years in Social Work, Education, Social Sciences, Social or Cultural Anthropology and an exceptional track record of academic accomplishment. Applicants need to be familiar with the subject matter of the Doctoral Research Group, possess relevant knowledge of empirical social research, and have good English language skills.

Applications in the following areas are welcome, but are not limited to:

  • Migration/mobility in old age (for example: poverty migration, retirement migration, forced migration)
  • Transnational aging and social services
  • Transnational aging and (post)colonialism

Scholars will participate in the study programme of the Doctoral Research Group on an ongoing basis. Consequently, scholars are expected to reside in Mainz or their environs for the duration of the scholarship.

Scholarship amounts to 1.400 € monthly and can be awarded for two years.

A complete application must comprehend:

  • a curriculum vitae including a description of the applicant’s academic career
  • copies of certificates and diplomas
  • a research proposal of the planned dissertation including the research question, methodological considerations, the status of current research on the topic, a working plan including a time schedule, and any work on the topic that the applicant might have already completed (5 pages)
  • a motivation letter (max. 2 pages)

The University of Mainz recognises a need for an increased proportion of women in research and teaching. Therefore, we encourage women to apply.

Applications must be either in German or English and are to be sent by November 26, 2018 via e-mail to Prof. Dr. Cornelia Schweppe, e-mail: c.schweppe@uni-mainz.de.
